One Shift Could Be Eliminated...
...East St. Louis, Illinois, is on the verge of major layoffs among city employees...The city council met until 1:00am Friday trying to decide how to balance the budget. Tough economic times and declining tax revenue are to blame for the anticipated lay-offs that could slash 20 percent of the fire department's staff, or one entire shift. City Manager Robert Betts says the numbers are not final yet, but he and the mayor plan to meet with East St. Louis city workers Monday at 10:00am, to be followed by a news conference.
